This is really odd story and I’m really not sure how to feel about this whole situation.

One the one hand, fuck Madero and his filthy commie state. I have a very hard time believing that Venezuela’s government would actually use their money in the manner they’ve stated. No doubt a substantial portion of those funds would probably just go straight into military spending because Madero, like every communist despot, is a paranoid schizo.

On the other hand, it is their money and I think a bank being able to withhold a customer’s deposits based on politics does set a pretty unsettling precedent. If they can do it to a country’s government, imagine what they could do to the individual. Beyond what they have, that is. Kind of funny how an entire country didn’t even trust itself enough to store gold within its own borders and relies on an English bank, though.

But what’s more, even though the opinion of someone like Bernie Sanders, who champions air-quotes “socialist” nations like Venezuela, are worth about as much as Venezuela’s own currency, this sort of situation does feed into the age-old excuse pinkos like to make that their system always fails because they’re always sabotaged by outside forces. Completely ignoring communism’s own inherent problems and the apparent paper-thin defenses against supposed sabotage even if that line were true 100% of the time.

Like I said, this is a weird story and I’m not really sure the proper solution. I have no love for banks or for tin horn dictatorships; they’re both over centralized dens of corruption anyway. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if Maduro just took the gold if it was released to him and skipped town to live like a king in Beijing. Venezuela has gotten itself into such a position that I really don’t see it digging itself out of the hole it dug with Chavez short of being annexed by Brazil or something. And even then, who would want the financial burden of taking it over? Not to mention America recently becoming a net-exporter of oil tanked that country’s value even more. Keep that in mind the next time a presidential hopeful says we need to ban fossil fuels here.

As for the Venezuelan people themselves, I want to feel sorry for them, but even the guy half of them want to replace Madero with is just as much as fifth columnist. They haven’t seemed to learn anything from all this chaos. The only ones with any sense have left the country.

So you know what? Go ahead. Let Madero have his gold. Watch what he does with it. Bet you all the needles brought in would be filled with water.
