Dam It All

My bitch-governor – who, by the way, just elongated her commie-block style sniffle response – must not have been around during a time when a little item in the news was all the rage – figuratively, and quite literally. The Flint Water Crisis, it was called. When a city of around 100,000 – surly less than that now – came under national scrutiny for somehow managing to fuck the water supply to the point where people were contracting a laundry list of illnesses from lead poisoning to legionnaire’s disease.

O, if just hadn’t been for that damn, private city council of Flint…wait…no, that was the city government’s fault.

My point being, that government is easily more inept and irresponsible with those things it decides it’s in charge of. Why? Is it because it seems to have a habit of shitting out as many bureaus and committees as people it has to man those positions? Well, yes, that too. But the real reason that government is just so bad at running things is because, unlike in a free-market, the government does not need to compete for your approval and brand-loyalty like a business does.

Sure, we vote people in and out of office, so at least the veneer of concern is needed. But not everybody in government is elected. In fact, most of them aren’t. The bulk of the government’s workforce and middle-management is hired and appointed. And, to a certain extent, that’s fine – we can’t be expected to mull over and vote for tens of thousands of government employees. The problem is, when it comes to government, there really isn’t an alternative. You can’t go a different, off-brand Secretary of State office down the street to renew your driver’s license if you have a bad experience there. And government employees are more likely to die in there position than be removed from it.

This isn’t an endorsement for Ancapistan either, that would just be trading one abuser for another. Rather, it would be far better for everyone if government, Wretched Gretchen in particular, could fuck off out of every little thing and let people manage more themselves.

Yes, this dam broke and now a big part of my state looks like the south after a hurricane. And yes, the dam was not government run; it was not maintained and has been around longer than anyone who helped build it. But would I expect a different result were Whitmer heading the dam’s repairs like the road repairs she ran on and won on? No. I fact, I’d only expect fewer people to lose their jobs for this disaster.
