Where do I even begin?

Well, first off, let’s touch on the Black Panther element of this. Not the black separatist group, the comic book hero of the same name who somehow became the new black Jesus by virtue of existing – though the series did certainly feed into the some of those separatist ideas. I could not tell you how or why the Black Panther became the cultural sensation that it did, especially considering that Stan Lee was the guy who invented him and his fictional kingdom of Wakanda. Not the blackest man to have ever lived.

But what’s even cringier than this fan-girl nonsense, is the fact that they aren’t even imitating Wakanda correctly. I’m not deep into the Marvel universe, but from what I do know about the setting, Wakanda is isolationist to a fault as well as culturally chauvinistic to the point where they even look down on the surrounding African nations and ethnic groups. Wakanda is, in other words, a highly exclusive ethno-state that would never permit the cohabitation of even diverging black ethnic groups, let alone other races. Not to mention it’s self-sufficient, which this town of “Freedom” likely never will be. But enough of the nerd shit.

Personally, I have a bigger problem with the deforestation involved in the construction of Little Wakanda than the town’s founding itself. I’ve said it before on previous videos, I believe people have just as much a right to dissociate from whomever they want as much as they do to associate. Though this certainly does feel like more of a stunt than anything. If this Ashley Scott and Renee Walters feel a sense of solidarity with indigenous people as they so claim, why are they buying land that they would have to recognize as being stolen and use it for the foundation of a “black-town” rather than give it to a local native tribe as a gesture of good faith? Seems a tad hypocritical.

I’m also curious as to this town’s vetting process for applicants. It’s stated that “Pro-Black White People” are permitted to apply. How do you determine if they’re pro-black? What does that mean? Do they have to meet a certain standard of self-loathing and self-denigrating? And how come other non-white people seem get a pass on this? Maybe I’m just lacking in worldly perspective, but if I were Hispanic or Arab or some denomination of East-Asian, I don’t think I’d take too kindly to being placed in this artificial category of “People of Color”. I don’t know if Scott or Walters know this, but just because someone isn’t of European descent, doesn’t mean they identify with, or even particularly like black people. Prejudice does exist between non-white groups, but I guess if American media is your only frame of reference, you would not be any the wiser.

In any case if the once autonomous zone of formerly known as Chaz is anything to go by – a blatant, reactionist endeavor like this one – then I don’t see Little Wakanda being much more than a headline. People will come, get hyped, then leave once they realize how much work it is to actually make something like this work. If these two ladies really did want a place for black people to run away to, it would probably be less work and more cost-effective to just buy people plane-tickets to Sudan or something. But what does a sneering imperialist pig like me know about anything, right?
