For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:26-29

Paul declared that Christians are sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus. When a sinner is born again, they become a child of God––old things have passed away and all things have become brand new (2 Corinthians 5:17). As a believer, they are empowered by the Holy Spirit to walk the Christian life. This sonship is symbolically seen through baptism.

Baptism is a testimony to the world that a person has been born again of the Holy Spirit. They are a child of God. If a person was baptized as a baby, it is of no value. Baptism does not save a person. Baptism is for the believer who is old enough to understand what water baptism means.

It is important for a Christian to be baptized in water because it is a biblical doctrine. When a person goes under the water, symbolically it speaks of the cemetery. The sinful man is buried in Christ Jesus. As a person comes back out of the water, symbolically this speaks of the Resurrection and walking in the newness of life. What happens if a person dies before they are baptized in water? Salvation is freely given. Remember, we are not under the Law of legalism, but the law of grace.

Paul was not a male chauvinist, as some people believe. Notice, he placed men and women, Jew and Greek, slave and free under Jesus Christ. They are all one in Christ. If you have accepted Christ, He has become the common denominator between you and everyone else. In fact, even though we were not born Jews, we become spiritual Jews with Abraham. Jews and Gentiles have become a part of the Kingdom of God in Jesus Christ––amazing!
