Year of the Rat
I could have sworn her name was Fa Mulan in the original…
You can take the points I just made from the first two stories we covered this episode and get a pretty good idea of what I’m going to say here.
The next time Disney puts out an obnoxious tweet or PR statement about how the world needs to come together to combat hate or some dumb hippie bullshit like that, it will be so, so easy to just lambast them on how they shot a movie next to an honest-to-God prison camp full of ethnic and religious minorities being tortured and killed. I should have expected this, but I genuinely thought this story was a joke when I first read the title. It’s almost too twisted.
At what point does a corporation become such a bottom-bitch to a communist state menacing the entire world and threatening global domination that we force them to divest from the US completely? At what point are the executives of Disney - or of the NBA for that matter - complicate in crimes against humanity? At what point does everybody just drop their completely redundant Disney Plus account and pirate Disney’s shit like good little boys and girls? All wishful thinking, I know. But hey, a man can dream.
Now, it makes perfect sense for a bastardization – I mean live-action remake of Mulan to be filmed in China for the sake of authenticity. But that’s hardly the issue here. Why, of all places, did Disney make the conscious and informed decision to film in Xinjiang? Did they seriously think this wouldn’t come out? That a genocide could be a well kept secret in an age where everyone’s walking around with a high-definition video cameras and where catching every dissenter is like trying to catch smoke with your bare hands? Was Disney just not satisfied in its systematic sodomization of the StarWars series, and just had to fuck up the legacy of another beloved IP?
Again, because I feel the need to reiterate this; I am in no way advocating that we go storming into China liberate these camps, but I also think it makes perfect sense for businesses and nations with a shred of common fucking decency to cease doing business with despotic states that commit heinous acts of bull shitery to their own people – of which there are many.
I hate evoking Trump on the little things like this, but in case you haven’t noticed, stories like entertainment monopolies being buddy-buddy with communist dictatorships seem to slip under the radar unless Trump tweets about it. That seems to be the only way any story gets pinned long enough for it to be discussed and acted upon to any meaningful degree. But maybe he’s storing all this flack away for when he really needs a nut-check China after he wins again and really promises to fuck them up unless they submit. In any case, I did my part and helped give this story a little more attention. Guess all that “never again” rhetoric from WW2 didn’t apply to everyone.
