Essential freedom (or Liberty), is more important than safety. These are concepts people have trouble grasping. Why? I'd rather be free and dead. Over the alternative: be safe for a few days, then be under a dictatorship. Never trade safety for your freedom. Safety is always temporary. You're always exposed to risk no matter where you are. Safety is a sham. Of course, I'm no psychopath, I understand that my freedoms end where another person's freedoms begins.
