A funeral for a transgender-identifying man has been in the news recently, because the indecent event was held in a Catholic Church. The deceased male was well-known transgender activist, Cecilia Gentili, a self-professed atheist. He had never been Catholic.

The funeral was attended by around 1,000 people, and as could have been predicted, it was more of a pride parade than anything solemn or holy. The deceased man’s picture was shown near the altar, with a halo around him, surrounded by the Spanish words for “transvestite,” “whore,” “blessed” and “mother” above the text of Psalm 25. He had worked as a prostitute and had fought for the decriminalization and legalization of prostitution.

This paper talks about the legality of prostitution, the title seems to be rather misguiding. No matter how the west has tried to outlaw prostitution, it's always been there. To me, it's the right of the woman. It's her body, if she wants to sell it, so be it. But regulate the hell out of it so that STDs and STIs can't be passed, and human trafficking is stopped.

The only way to stop human trafficking and the sex trade, is to make it a topic of conversation. While I don't feel that we need to stop the sex trade (this includes sex toys and porn sites) altogether, and it's the woman's right to sell her body if she wishes to (and I really don't give a fuck, quite frankly), we haven't been able to get rid of prostitution in over 200 years, we won't be able to get rid of it in 200 more years. It's just best to legalize it, regulate it, and allow them to get FICA out of it, so they can retire out of it.

Let's be adults about it, like the Feudal Japanese were. Sex is a bodily function that every adult needs to do, and everyone needs release. Stop being so... Victorian Era about it.

OK, this is one thing I am all for: Legalize prostitution, but regulate the shit out of it so much that no one wants to do it. Make them get licensed to do it, and in order to get licensed, they need to pass monthly health checks to be STD free, show proof of age, sanity, etc., they have to show potential clients their prostitution card (license/ID) with their picture and name when asked.

When found not in compliance, people face life in prison without parole. No plea deals, no exceptions to the law. Then tax the shit out of it on the state level.
