"The Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) warned California Gov. Gavin Newsom Tuesday that his reopening plan discriminates against religion and must be modified to allow for religious services to reopen." There is nothing a first blush wrong with the #DOJ statement with one fundamental exception. How is the right to #ExerciseReligion or to #PeaceablyAssemble any different for the citizen who wants to open their business or to patron that business? The #Constitution is not a menu system where one picks which rights are in operation. It is a holistic operating document with every word supporting all the other words. There may be essential and non-essential workers in government service. However, those categories do not exist for the citizen. Everyone is equally essential. The DOJ should be forcing it all open.
