    Rest for the labouring

    ‘Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.’ Matthew 11:28–29
    SUGGESTED FURTHER READING: Ecclesiastes 1:12–2:11

    Some of you are labouring after happiness. You think to find it in gain, hoarding up your pounds and seeking for rest in the abundance of your beloved wealth. You will never have enough till you get Christ, but then you will be full to the brim. Contentment is the peculiar jewel of the beloved of the Lord Jesus. All the Indies could not fill a human heart: the soul is insatiable till it finds the Saviour; then it leans on him and enters into perfect peace.

    Perhaps you are labouring after fame. You despise gold, but long to obtain a great name. Alas, ambition’s ways are very weary, and he who climbs to the loftiest peak of honour finds that it is a slippery place where rest is quite unknown. Take a friend’s advice and care no longer for man’s praise, for it is mere wind. If you would rise to a great name, become a Christian, for the name of Christ is the ‘name which is above every name’, and it is bliss to be hidden beneath it and overshadowed by it. Christ will not make you great among men, but he will make you so little in your own esteem that the lowest place at his table will more than satisfy you. He will give you rest from that delirious dream of ambition, and fire you with a higher ambition than ever.

    What are you labouring for? Is it knowledge? I commend you: it is a good possession and a choice treasure. Search for it as for silver. But all the knowledge that is to be had from the zenith to the centre of the earth will never satisfy your understanding, till you know Christ and are found in him. He can give rest to your soul by giving you the knowledge of God and a sense of his love. Whatever it is you labour after, come to Jesus and he will give you rest.

    FOR MEDITATION: No one had as much happiness, fame and knowledge as Solomon (1 Kings 4:29–34; 10:1–8), but he received earthly blessings for seeking God and his wisdom instead of them (1 Kings 3:7–14). In Proverbs 3 he tells us to admit the lack of wisdom (vv. 5 & 7), approach the Lord of wisdom (vv. 5–7, 19) and avoid the loss of wisdom (v. 21). This will bring true happiness, gain and honour (vv. 13–18).

    The claims of God

    ‘Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting: and his truth endureth to all generations.’ Psalm 100:3–5
    SUGGESTED FURTHER READING: 1 Samuel 15:10–31

    If ever this driveling age of little men is to be lifted up into something like respectability and redeemed from the morass of falsehood in which it lies festering, we must breed a race of men who mean to serve God come what may, and to make no reckoning but this: ‘Is this right? It shall be done. Is this wrong? Then it shall cease.’ There must be no compromise, no talk about marring our usefulness and spoiling our position by being too exact.

    Usefulness and position! Let them be marred and spoiled if truth comes in the way, for God is to be followed into the jungle and down the wild beasts’ throats and into the jaws of hell, if he leads the way. God must be the guide, and if we follow God it shall be well with us. But if we do not, that which man thinks easiest is after all the hardest. He thinks it easiest to be as near right as you can, but to run no risks; he thinks it best to keep peace at home, to yield many points, and not to be too puritanical and too precise. That is the easy way, the way which God abhors, and the way which will end in a festering conscience at last and in being shut out of heaven.

    But the way to serve God is to be washed in the blood of Jesus, and then to obey the Lord without reserve and seek his honour only. This is the way to heaven, and when we reach those blissful seats we shall be all in tune with the perfected, for they serve the Lord day and night and find it bliss to do so. This preparation and service on earth is absolutely essential to the enjoyment of heaven above.

    FOR MEDITATION: (Our Own Hymn Book no.187 v.3—Isaac Watts, 1709)
    ‘God is a King of power unknown;
    Firm are the orders of His throne;
    If He resolves, who dare oppose,
    Or ask Him why, or what He does?’

    C. H. Spurgeon and Terence Peter Crosby, 365 Days with Spurgeon (Volume 4), (Leominster, UK: Day One Publications, 2007), 295.

    ‘Forever with the Lord’

    ‘So shall we ever be with the Lord.’ 1 Thessalonians 4:17
    SUGGESTED FURTHER READING: John 13:36–14:6

    Forever with the Lord—what will it mean? I remember a sermon upon this text by a notable preacher, of which the heads were as follows:- ‘Forever life, forever light, forever love, forever peace, forever rest, forever joy.’ What a chain of delights! What more can heart imagine or hope desire? Carry those things in your mind and you will get, if you can drink into them, some idea of the blessedness which is contained in being forever with the Lord; but still recollect these are only the fruits and not the root of the joy. Jesus is better than all these. His company is more than the joy which comes out of it. I do not care so much for ‘life forever’, nor for ‘light forever’, as I do for ‘forever with the Lord’. To be with him! I ask no other bliss and cannot imagine anything more heavenly. Why, the touch of the hem of his garment healed the sick woman; the sight of him was enough to give life to us when we were dead! What, then, must it be to be with him actually, consciously and always, to be with him no more by faith, but in very deed with him forever?

    My soul is ready to swoon away with too much joy as she drinks even in her shallow measure into the meaning of this thought, and I dare not venture further. I must leave you to muse your souls into it, for it needs quiet thought and room for free indulgence of holy imagination until you cause your soul to dream of this excess of joy. ‘Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit’.

    FOR MEDITATION: (Our Own Hymn Book no.846 v.1—James Montgomery, 1835)
    ‘ “Forever with the Lord!”
    Amen! so let it be!
    Life from the dead is in that word,
    ’Tis immortality!’

  • As everything is emanated from the One, the true meaning of life is to come back to where we originally come from. The first step of doing so is by realizing that we are All One. The reason why we are here on this planet is that we have fallen from the State of Divinity from the Garden of Bliss, just like what is indicated in the symbolic story of Adam and Eve.

    Through self-realization, we can have access to the true Power of Man, which is the power of Creating and Becoming – that which makes Man the most supreme beasts on Earth.

  • Earth’s mournful bliss I left, and toys
    Of wanton life, and foolish joys:
    To thee alone I cling;
    Thou art my Life, and King:
    Grant that I may, O Blessed, ever close to thee,
    Thy royal beauty see!
    With holy feet, and lamps bright burning,
    I go to meet my Lord returning.
