Hope in the Midst
Read Lamentations 1:1 through 5:22

The Book of Lamentations was also written by Jeremiah. In the Book of Jeremiah, the prophet recorded God’s imminent judgment against kingdoms and nations. In Lamentations, Jeremiah recorded his grieving over the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of its people to Babylon. The book is structured as a funeral dirge. Each year this book was read aloud to the exiles, reminding them of the circumstances and choices that brought them to that place. In the midst of this lament, God crafted one of the most hope-filled Scriptures found in the Old Testament.

The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning (Lamentations 3:22–23).

These words of God have survived across centuries, cultures, and the rise and fall of nations to cut through the darkness and deliver hope. They are not mere descriptors or pretty phrases—they are the heart of God toward His people.

Prayer Suggestion: Pray for opportunity to share God’s hope with those in distress.
