When the captured ark of the covenant was returned by the Philistines, it remained in the house of Abinadab for safekeeping. Then, David tried to bring the ark to Jerusalem, but not in the way God’s Law required. He placed the ark on an oxcart rather than on the shoulders of the Levites, causing a man’s death. Afraid to continue, David left the ark in the home of Obed-Edom, a Gittite. Obed-Edom experienced blessings of God as never before. When the ark moved to Jerusalem, Obed-Edom moved with it. Years later, his descendants still served near the ark, treasuring God’s closeness. All of these descendants of Obed-Edom, including their sons and grandsons—sixty-two of them in all—were very capable men, well qualified for their work (1 Chronicles 26:8).
