GOD'S WORD FOR TODAY
DAILY DEVOTIONAL
THE PEOPLE COMPLAINED
READ NUMBERS 11:1 THROUGH 13:33
Soon the people began to complain about their hardship, and the Lord heard everything they said. Then the Lord’s anger blazed against them, and he sent a fire to rage among them, and he destroyed some of the people in the outskirts of the camp (Numbers 11:1).

Of all the words that could have appeared in the opening phrase of the eleventh chapter of Numbers, “complained” is heartbreaking. The people could have praised, rejoiced, prayed, remembered, danced, or even waited, but the fact is, they complained. Their complaining angered God to the point that He sent fire among the people He had miraculously freed from slavery.

It may be tempting to shake your head in disbelief at their foolishness, but that may not be the intent of this event being included in Scripture. God’s anger was kindled by something that most people, believers included, do every single day: complain. Unchecked, complaining can spread like wildfire and blind us from seeing our blessings. This can cause us to rob God of the gratitude and praise He deserves.

Prayer Suggestion: God, I repent of my complaining. Please create in me a heart filled with gratitude.
