GOD'S WORD FOR TODAY
DAILY DEVOTIONAL
REVERENCE
READ LEVITICUS 24:1 THROUGH 25:55
When Sam’s neighbor knocked on his door, Sam stepped out onto the front porch with a towel wrapped around his hand.
“Sam, what happened? Your hand’s bleeding badly.”
Sam winced as the neighbor applied pressure to the wound. “My dog got spooked and took a chunk out of me. It’s a shame, but I’ll have to put him down. If he’d do that to me, imagine what he’d do to someone else.”
“Say to the people of Israel: Those who curse their God will be punished for their sin. Anyone who blasphemes the Name of the Lord must be stoned to death by the whole community of Israel” (Leviticus 24:15–16).
Sam’s dog bit the hand that fed him. One man in Israel was guilty of a similar thing. Although God had freed the people from slavery, fed them manna and quail, miraculously supplied them with water, and personally escorted them through the desert—this one man cursed God. God called everyone who heard the cursing to respond. God deserves and demands better.
Thought for Today: The only proper attitude toward God is a respectful reverence.
Quicklook: Leviticus 24:10–15
