GOD'S WORD FOR TODAY
DAILY DEVOTIONAL
REST
READ EXODUS 19:1 THROUGH 21:36
What does it mean to remember the Sabbath Day? How can the day be kept holy? Do people still need to follow specific rules?
God gave a command that emphasized a particular day. Though other information comes later regarding how the nation of Israel could obey this, God didn’t offer specific instructions or provide details—the way people often prefer. This sentence says a lot:
“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy” (Exodus 20:8).
The first word in the command is “remember.” People hurry through life; cultures seek to meet the needs of each market; and busyness robs multitudes of reverence. But the Sabbath is a day to remember and rest.
Rest should be considered a friend, not a foe. Sleep. Relaxation. Choosing to be unplugged. Breathing deeply.
A little rest can remind people that God is actually the One in charge. He rested and so should His people. Pushing too hard for too long can drain a person physically and spiritually.
Thought for Today: Sometimes the best way to say yes to what matters most is to simply say no.
Quicklook: Exodus 20:8–11
