The first of the Ten Commandments is "I am God your Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, from the place of slavery." That's not an opening, introductory statement, it's a commandment. It means “to know that God exists,” and it's putting the onus on you. Don't take a leap of faith. Think for yourself. Judaism starts and ends with independent, critical thinking. That probably explains the clichés, "Ask a Jew a question, and he answers you with a question," and "Two Jews. Three opinions." Independent thinking is a part of our collective spiritual subconscious.
