GOD'S WORD FOR TODAY
DAILY DEVOTIONAL
WHAT DOES GOD REQUIRE?
READ: MICAH 1:1 THROUGH 7:20
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).

All of Scripture’s teachings are wrapped up in these three directives to God’s people: “act justly,” “love mercy,” and “walk humbly with your God.”

The first two elements reflect how God has related to His people over the millennia. He reviews His righteous acts and redemption (mercy) in Israel’s history (6:4–5). Humankind’s response has been to worship Him with outward religious acts (6:6–7).

But God wants so much more than that. He wants people to treat one another with justice and mercy—often thought of as opposites: enforcing the consequences of breaking the law vs. compassion.

And He wants His people to walk humbly with Him. What does that look like? Merriam-Webster defines humble as having a “spirit of deference or submission.”

All three of these concepts are easy to say but hard to live out.

Thought for Today: Christians who act justly and love mercy reflect God’s character.
