Not the sexiest shot I've seen posted but I like the artsiness of it. This is similar to the beastly power plant that resides inside a commercial jet liner's engine. That gigantic fan in the front is just a fan. What runs it is a jet engine like this. They decided some time ago for many reasons it was better to use a jet engine to spin a big fan to push the plane than to just use the jet engine directly. Anyway, I'm a big fan of aviation. Too faded to be trusted at the controls of a real plane though so I limit myself to flight sim.
