  • I just thought I would put up a rudimentary back up power solution with things being the way they are.

This is not a "power everything in your home replacement", but a emergency back up. You will have to keep on point with your power usage. Lessen some loads and perhaps figure out alternatives for some things but the system I set up is enough to run a large size RV trailer which is more than enough for someone to live on.

The system I have in place is 4 Deep Cycle Lead Acid batteries with 2 solar cells, a charge controller and a 1500w inverter. The inverter is up to you. Your ideas about what you will need will be different so you will have to total power draw in a minimal situation and then upscale to taste.

This system without the inverter cost us approximately $750

The nice part of this system is that it doesn't need to be just solar for charging the battery bank. It is a standard 12 volt system at 400 Amp Hours (wired in parallel) You can hook it up to a generator or even your car. In my case I can even switch to propane because I have a alternate fuel conversion for my vehicle.

There are so many different options for getting around this insanity, you just have to do the research. Hell its not above consideration to run a generator on steam if you are up to the task of manufacturing the apparatus.

Anyway, just some odd info I thought you all might be able to use.

  • Vehicle Propane Conversion

Something you might want to consider. After the gas prices got to 4.00+ I decided to buy a conversion kit. This is a conversion kit that allows you to use Propane as your fuel. The benefits? 2 dollar a gallon. Your Oil changes will go from every 3000 miles to about every 150,000. Your oil will look like you just put it in when you change it. The fuel is easier on your engine. It burns cleaner and more completely. Really there is no down side. Mostly the fact that you will never have to smog the system again. Cost me about 650 bucks but I figure it will pay itself back in the span of about a year. I will keep you all appraised. I have to use up my gas before I convert my 76 Ford F100 so 20 gal on the main tank and 2 5 gallon emergency tanks.
