We are well past peak for global oil supplies. We are essentially out of the high energy anthracite coal. Natural Gas requires fracking and other wasteful and dirty techniques to get. Pipelines, refineries, oil tankers, off shore and deep ocean wells, high Arctic wells, are all very expensive and dangerous. For every ton of coal you burn you produce 2.5 tons of CO2 and sulfate aerosols, and particulates that kill several million people a year worldwide.
Government DOES NOT supply power and fossil fuel, so the switch to renewable energy WILL NOT increase your taxes, but LOWER THEM because the fossil fuel industry is by far the MOST HEAVILY SUBSIDIZED INDUSTRY ON EARTH. The United States pays more in permanent fossil fuel subsidies than it does for our bloated Defense Department. Eliminating these subsidies will make solar and wind even more competitive than they are right now. Solar and wind will LOWER your energy bills because while it takes a ton of coal at $41.37 to power a 60 watt light bulb for a year, sunlight to do the same thing costs $0.
It makes extreme sense to move to 100% renewables quickly, and this can be done swiftly BY PRIVATE INDUSTRY if the government just gets the hell out of the way and stops subsidizing the dirty, but powerful fossil fuel cartels that own our politicians - both parties.
Power utilities are switching because it makes ECONOMIC SENSE to do so, not because they give a flying flip about the environment. Coal plants are licensed for 40 years and the average US coal plant is 43 years of age. No new coal plants are being built, and they are being replaced by NG conversions and renewables - mostly wind. 63% of all new grid capacity last year was wind and solar.
Hydrogen as a fuel has extreme advantages over gasoline and diesel. it has major advantages over EV's, and the technology already exists to move to H2 as a fuel.
