  • “I often think how necessary it is for men who are vested with trust and great power to be inspired with the understanding of what seems to be an obvious truism, which is that we live on one planet and it is not in man’s power—at least in the foreseeable future—to change that. In a certain sense there is an analogy here—I like this comparison—with Noah’s Ark where both the ‘clean’ and the ‘unclean’ found sanctuary. But regardless of who lists himself with the 'clean' and who is considered to be 'unclean,' they are all equally interested in one thing and that is that the Ark should successfully continue its cruise. And we have no other alternative: either we should live in peace and cooperation so that the Ark maintains its buoyancy, or else it sinks. Therefore we must display concern for all of mankind, not to mention our own advantages, and find every possibility leading to peaceful solutions of problems.”

  • We built a modern Noah’s Ark on £100,000 stilts
A couple has constructed their dream retirement home in a flood zone by the River Thames.
Tom and Maggie Walsh are living on the edge in their retirement. The couple has just built their dream home in a flood zone on the banks of the Thames in Oxfordshire. According to UK climate change projections, average winter rainfall in England could increase by 41 percent by the year 2050, and peak river flows could increase by 50 percent. There has been significant flooding in the Thames Valley in 2000, 2003, 2007, 2012, 2013-14, and 2019-20. Yet the Walshes are not losing any sleep. That’s because they are living in a floodproof house. “It is quite a high-risk area but we are covered for events for 200 years, says Ben Holland, partner at HollandGreen Architecture, Interiors & Landscapes. As it gets.

  • 26 OCTOBER (UNDATED—PROBABLY 26 OCTOBER 1876)

    A family sermon

‘And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark … And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.’ Genesis 7:1, 7
    SUGGESTED FURTHER READING: Colossians 3:11–17

From the time of Noah’s entrance he is to find all his pleasure in the ark. There are no outdoor amusements for him or his family; he cannot even find pleasure in the scenery, for that is blotted out by the deluges of rain; the valleys have vanished and even the hills have disappeared as the deluge has increased. If he is to find any pleasure, he must find it inside the ark. It was a melancholy prospect indeed, if he could look out from the window, but his joy and delight lay within the chambers of the ark, for there was he saved and there he dwelt with God. All his food also to supply his necessities he must find inside the ark. He had no barn nor warehouse to look to, and there was no port at which he could take in cargo.
Whatever need might arise must be met by the stores within the ark, for there was nothing outside but death. All his work was inside the ark too.

He had nothing to do now except within that vessel, no fields to plough, no shops to keep, nothing to do but what was inside the ark. Now, when a soul comes to Christ, it commits itself to him for everything: Christ must feed it; you must no longer eat for your soul anything but the bread of heaven; Jesus must become meat and drink to you for his ‘flesh is meat indeed’ and his ‘blood is drink indeed’. Now you are to find your pleasure in him, your choicest delights, your sweetest joys, all in Christ Jesus, who is our hope, crown, delight and heaven. Henceforth your service must be to him only. ‘Ye are not your own. For ye are bought with a price’, and all that you have to do in this world now lies within the circumference of Christ’s will. The commonest duties of life are now to be brought within the sacred circle. You have nothing to do outside in the waters of sin, self and Satan. You need neither fish in the waters of sin, nor go boating upon the waves of worldliness; you are in danger if you do.

FOR MEDITATION: (Our Own Hymn Book no.489 v.1—Isaac Watts, 1709)
‘In vain we lavish out our lives to gather empty wind,
The choicest blessings earth can yield will starve a hungry mind.’

AN AMAZING FACT: In 1874, Methodists in Swan Quarter, North Carolina, decided to construct a permanent church building. The homeless Christians found what they believed was the ideal site for their church, a perfect lot in the heart of town on its highest ground. But when they approached the owner of the lot, Sam Sadler, he did not want to waste his prime real estate for a church. Even after their offer was increased, Sadler flatly refused to sell the land.

Soon after, the Methodists accepted a gift of land a half mile away on some low-lying property. The members cheerfully began building a modest but sturdy structure on brick piers. Then something miraculous occurred that has been confirmed by scores of witnesses. On September 17, 1876, right after they dedicated the small church, a powerful hurricane began to brew. Rain fell and the wind blew until the rising water lifted the little Methodist Church from its foundation and began to carry it like Noah’s ark up the street. People awoke the next morning to witness an amazing sight—the entire church was floating down Oyster Creek Road.

A few good Samaritans saw the drifting church and tried to tie it off with ropes, but it broke its moorings and continued its journey as though it had a mind of its own. It went straight down the road to a corner, bumped into a general store, then took a sharp right turn and headed down that road for about two city blocks until it reached the corner of what is now Church Street. Then it took another turn to the left, crossed the Carawan Canal, and stopped.

The little church had settled exactly in the center of the property the members had originally requested for their house of worship, the parcel Sam Sadler had refused to sell for a church. After seeing the mighty work of Providence, Mr. Sadler, with trembling hands, gave the title deed for the land to the Methodist pastor. When the church was dedicated, it was called “Providence.” Today, a sign stands in front of the Providence Church, reminding visitors this was the church “Moved by the Hand of God.”

Just as God guided that floating church, He guides His people and His church today. “The Lord is your keeper …” (Psalm 121:5). He will carry us through any flood of trouble or persecution that we face.
    KEY BIBLE TEXTS
The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea. Psalms 93:4

  • DUTCHMAN’S ARK
    Bible Study / Daily Devotional

AN AMAZING FACT: Dutch creationist Johan Huibers had a dream that someday Holland would be flooded. That led to his building a replica of Noah’s ark, complete with life-size animals. The seaworthy ark is only half the size of Noah’s original, but it is still nearly 230 feet long, 45 feet high, and 30 feet wide.

Life-size models of giraffes, elephants, lions, crocodiles, zebras, and bison are included in the ark’s interior. Even with all the animals it still has room for a 50-seat theater, where the story of Noah’s flood is retold. Eventually there will even be a petting zoo, with lambs, chickens, goats, and one camel. The total cost of the project was estimated to be around $1.2 million.

Johan also built the ark as testament to his literal belief in the Bible. He said, “This will speak very much to children, because it will give them something tangible to see that Noah’s ark really existed.” Assisted by his son, the 47-year-old contractor spent nearly two years building the ark by the water in Schagen, 30 miles north of Amsterdam.

As far as possible he has tried to remain true to the ark proportions described in the Bible, but Johan’s ark is constructed with American cedar and Norwegian pine rather than “gopher wood.” Biblical scholars are still not exactly sure what kind of wood that was. When the ark opened its doors in April 2007, visitors were stunned by its size. They think the Netherlands is probably the right place for an ark to be built.

With all the talk of global warming, some fear Holland will be the first place flooded if the polar caps melt much faster. Johan’s ark is a fully functional model and will even meet all the naval, fire, and animal rights regulations. Mr. Huibers plans to sail the ark through the interior waters around Holland. He’s praying this colossal exhibit will help renew interest in Christianity in the Netherlands, which has dramatically fallen in the past 50 years.

So will there be another global flood before Jesus returns? After Noah left the ark when the flood waters receded, the Bible says, “Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth” (Genesis 9:11). We are assured our world will not be destroyed again by water. But the Lord has warned that someday the earth will be cleansed by fire.

AN AMAZING FACT: On September 1, 1859, the Carrington Super Flare, the largest solar flare in modern history, struck the earth, causing the most powerful geomagnetic storm ever recorded. It caused the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) to shine so powerfully they were visible around the world, even from the Caribbean Islands. They were so bright over the Rockies that gold miners thought it was morning and got up to prepare breakfast!

Between August 28 and September 2, 1859 many sunspots and solar flares were observed in the sun. British astronomer Richard Carrington observed an unusually large flare just before noon on September 1. This storm, also called the 1859 Solar Superstorm, caused the failure of telegraph lines across Europe and North America. Some operators even received a shock from the incident. Telegraph pylons literally threw sparks and telegraph paper sometimes started on fire. There were some systems that continued to send and receive messages though disconnected from power. By and large, the communication system on which millions depended was fried.

A geomagnetic storm caused by a solar flare temporarily affects the earth’s magnetosphere. Ice core samples from Greenland have shown that this phenomenon takes place about once every 500 years. Less severe storms have occurred in 1921 and 1960 and caused widespread radio disruption. In the fall of 2003, there were 17 major solar flares observed that resulted in an extreme radio blackout. It severely damaged a Japanese satellite and the WAAS system of the Federal Aviation Administration was offline for about 30 hours because of the storm. It is believed if a solar flare like the 1859 storm hit the world today it would suddenly wipe out the Internet and modern communications on a global scale.

The Bible says this would not be the first time international communications broke down through a heavenly phenomenon. Some years after Noah’s flood, mankind began to migrate to a plain and build a tower “to make a name for ourselves” (Genesis 11:4). “They directly rebelled against God’s instructions, and the Lord came down ...” and “confused their language” (v. 7) so they could not communicate. People were then scattered abroad and the Tower of Babel was never completed.

What towers of rebellion do we erect that cut off our communication with heaven?
