The similarities between the HIV outbreak in the 80s and the ongoing outbreak of coronavirus are outstanding. In 1981, the first cases of HIV were found in five young and previously healthy gay men in Los Angeles and New York City. Authorities and corporate media popularized the idea that the cause of the immune deficiency was sexual and the syndrome was even initially called gay-related immune deficiency (or GRID). By the end of the year, there were 270 reported cases of severe immune deficiency among gay men 121 of which died the same year. Since its discovery 40 years ago, HIV has predominantly been blamed on gays and fueled anti-gay sentiment in the United States and around the globe.
