Some call Bearsden snobby, but this ’burb bristling with boutiques knows exactly what it is and wants to keep it that way.
Bearsden has always attracted a certain sort of well-heeled Glaswegian, ever since the rural hamlet expanded, as wealthy Victorian businessmen moved in and built grand villas to mark their rising fortunes. The poet Edwin Morgan, the former Scotland football team boss Alex McLeish and Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos have all called the suburb home. Now Bearsden, six miles northwest of the city, has seen a near-stampede of Teslas and Mini Countrymans, with new arrivals seeking to set up home, get their kids into a top school and, well, get to the top in general.
