ℕ𝔼𝕆ℕ ℝ𝔼𝕍𝕆𝕃𝕋 on Gab: 'Some people are missing the point of this post so I'm going to explain reaaaaallllllyy slow and using small words. When Gab was deplatformed in 2018, it lost access to a bunch of commonly-used online services. It lost the ability to do things like host chats, process payments, and much more because a lot of that functionality was provided by 3rd parties. Gab had to rebuild essentially from scratch, very quickly. To do so, it leveraged an open-source system called Mastodon, which... exists. Mastodon very quickly proved itself to be poorly coded and was stretched beyond the absolute limit by Gab's massive userbase. The site functioned intermittently - at best (which was no small feat for a company that had just been universally deplatformed from everything). @a and the team spent months putting band-aids on top of band-aids. Eventually, the solution was clear: every part of Mastodon would need to be replaced with custom-built code. So that's what @a and the team did. The stability, speed, and features you enjoy today are the direct result of years of hard work, specifically to address the massive shortcomings of the Mastodon system. So unless Trump and his team have spent years ironing out all of Mastodon's flaws and shortcomings... it's simply not going to be able to handle the amount of traffic Trump's presence will bring. I'm sorry, but that is just the reality. Whoever advised him on this has, once again, advised him wrong. You can't scale Ruby on rails for tens of millions of users. It's just not made for that. (And to be fair to Mastodon, it was never designed for that. It was meant to be smaller clusters of a few thousand users at most, and then those clusters could connect together. It was more concerned with creating a protocol, not a platform). Add that to the fact that this Trump site is probably running on 3rd party systems... like Gab was in 2018, and Parler was in 2020... It just looks like, from where I'm standing, they're repeating the mistakes of years past because they haven't learned the necessary lessons, yet. You have to own the infrastructure and the code. If you don't, you're vulnerable to deplatforming and all kinds of digital woes. Trump should just get on Gab. It's where all the Frogs are.'
