Christmas 2020 may well be remembered by most of as “THE Christmas of 2020”. It is likely that our holiday season and celebrations will be much different than in past years. Traditions will have to be reimagined, not necessarily abandoned. Many of us may just find ourselves discovering new, delightful, and lasting ways to celebrate the most important event in history; God coming to earth.

Some of my favorite things about this season are the songs we sing in praise, worship, and celebration. As I was “singing” these in my head I began to apply them to the upcoming Christmas 2020. Here are some of my musings.

“Up On the Housetop” – “The reindeer pause” and “down through the chimney with good Saint Nick” – Good thing Santa works alone so he does not violate any social distancing rules on Christmas Eve. But one must ponder whether social distancing takes place at the North Pole among Santa and the elves. Do the elves all have cute little holiday masks?

“Joy to the World” – Having joy this year will no doubt be a challenge for some who are experiencing tragedy, change, anxiety, financial stress, and sadness. But the song goes on to remind us that “The Lord is Come”, and that “The Savior Reigns and He rules the world with truth, grace, and love.” Shifting our focus to gratitude will cultivate joy in our thoughts, hearts, and attitudes. Share your joy!

“Hark the Herald Angels Sing” – There will probably be few if any, Christmas concerts this year that we can attend in person. Maybe we'll be listening to the radio or set up a virtual family gathering and sing together.

“Jingle Bells” – “Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way; Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh” – Hey, a holiday activity that would probably still be appropriate so long as it remains within the minimum group size… but just make sure your fellow passengers have their holiday masks.

“I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” – “And in despair, I bowed my head, there is no peace on earth I said. Then pealed the bells more loud and deep God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; the wrong shall fail, the right prevail.” Contemplate who wins in the end.

“We Three Kings of Orient Are” – “Bearing gifts we traverse afar” – we will most likely experience less travel this year and probably limited ability to personally deliver gifts. So, since we are blessed to live in an online world, choose that thoughtful gift and have it delivered.

“Caroling, Caroling” – The tradition of caroling may look different this year as the carolers may be wearing masks. So, turn up those hearing aids!

“Go Tell It On The Mountain” – Well there is one song that we should have no problems following through on!

“Away In A Manger” - “Be near me Lord Jesus I ask Thee to stay; close by me forever and love me I pray.” That is a promise on which we can rely not only during Christmas (as well as all of the hard days before and after), but for every day of our lives.
