The Psychological Warfare of Politics: What is in a Color? During the revolutionary war, the British wore red uniforms. Thus they were called Red Coats. The Colonialists wore blue uniforms (those that could afford them). In the Civil War the northern armies wore blue uniforms. Southerners (those defending slavery: predominately Democrats) called them Blue Bellies. However, the main battle flag for the southern armies was a Red flag called The Star and Bars. A flag of controversy in the modern era. The flag for the National Socialist Party of Germany (Fascists) was Red. The Soviet Union and the Chinese Communist flags are Red. Which political party espouses Communist, Fascist, and /or Socialist philosophies? Which political party defended slavery, segregation, and uses the racism they invented and practice as a wedge issue every election? Like everything coming from the major media outlets and many political corners, up is down, and down is up. So it is with the assigned colors of political association.
