Debating the Presidential Debates: The Traditional Format - What Used to Happen
The purpose of a debate is to allow the candidates the ability to contrast their approaches to solving the problems and issues of the day. From a voters perspective, debates are intended to highlight differences providing for an honest evaluation and judgment of those seeking public office. What has been lost can be found in the format of the debates, not necessarily the candidates.
Asking specific questions of each candidate does not allow for a fair evaluation of the candidates and their corresponding policies. What should happen, what used to happen. The candidates were asked a single question on an issue. Each candidate was then given the opportunity to respond to the question and rebut the other candidate. A second part of the format was that each candidate was given an opportunity to ask questions of the other. Each being given equal time to respond to each other's questions. The moderators should only be there to provide issue questions equally to both candidates and be timekeepers for the dialogue between the candidates. The current method is a media show with pre-chosen winners and losers.
