US nonfarm payrolls rise by 253,000 in April
Total nonfarm payroll employment in the United States grew by 253,000 in April, according to a report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday. The report came in above the 180,000 expected.
The unemployment rate was little changed from March and stood at 3.4%, with the number of unemployed persons at 5.7 million. Average hourly earnings were up by 0.5% to $33.36. According to the report, the healthcare sector increased by 40,000 people, and the leisure and hospitality segment added 31,000 workers in April. Employment in financial activities rose by 23,000.
