The rainbow and the four leaf clover were symbols to represent indigenous leprechaun culture, as these were sources of their leprechaun magic and prosperity. The rainbow had been ruthlessly plundered from the Leprechauns, cutting off one of the main sources of their magic, and destroying their natural stores of wealth, that no longer could be hidden at the end of the rainbows. So what happened to the Leprechaun's vast stores of gold? No one knows for sure...
