This once thriving ancient Greek city has seen it all and lived to tell the tale. A major Roman site on the west coast of Asia Minor, near present-day Selçuk, it was one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League during the Classical Greek era.

  • Revelation 2:1–11 (ESV)

    To the Church in Ephesus
2 “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands.
2 “ ‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. 3 I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary. 4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. 6 Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.’

    To the Church in Smyrna
8 “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life.
9 “ ‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’

  • GOD'S WORD FOR TODAY
    DAILY DEVOTIONAL
    ANOTHER GIFT
    READ: ACTS 17:1 THROUGH 19:41
While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” (Acts 19:1–2).

The disciples in Ephesus didn’t realize the Holy Spirit existed, so they never asked to receive Him. The fact that Paul said they believed may indicate these disciples already knew about Jesus, His ministry, and His resurrection. As former followers of John the Baptist, they had been baptized with the baptism of repentance.

Before he died, however, John pointed to Jesus as the foretold Messiah who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire (Matthew 3:11). Having a better understanding, they asked Paul to rebaptize them in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when he laid hands on them, they received the promised Holy Spirit baptism as well, evidenced by speaking in tongues.

The New Testament encourages people to receive two important spiritual gifts: salvation and the baptism in the Holy Spirit. The first one they need for eternal life, the latter for edification and ministry.

Thought for Today: Paul’s question is still relevant. Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?

    Quicklook: Acts 19:1–7

  • Just a note! If and when a new Dictator and demigod takes the throne in the USA and demands we bow down to him/her as gods read Revelations 1. You can watch the pastor from First Dallas, especially starting about the 13-minute mark, John was the pastor of Ephesus and when the emperor Titus Flavius Domitian demanded everyone bow down to him as a god. John refused and was exiled to the mines on the island of Patmos for the rest of his natural life.
