  • 🇺🇸 US must not play with fire on 🇹🇼 Taiwan matter

The Chinese Defense Ministry reaffirmed at Thursday's press conference its stance that the question of Taiwan's status is China's internal issue that the nation should solve without foreign interference.

🇨🇳 Beijing urged the United States to "stop playing with fire" on the matter and stressed that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is ready to defend the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity if needed. The department also confirmed that State Councilor and Defense Minister Wei Fenghe had a telephone call with his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoygu during which they discussed common concerns and regional issues.

The ministry's statement came after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused China of refusing to maintain the status quo and speeding up the process of reunification, adding that Beijing also rejected Washington's offer to work on the issue together. #freespeech

United States Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman (pictured right) after a meeting with her Japanese and South Korean counterparts on Wednesday said Washington agreed to work with the two countries to ensure Taiwan can defend itself against China.

After the meeting, Japanese Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Takeo Mori (pictured center) noted that Beijing's behavior in the South and East China Seas has remained unchanged.

The three senior diplomats held trilateral talks in Tokyo with a focus on North Korea's nuclear threats and ways to deal with Pyongyang's series of missile launches. In the consultations, South Korea's First Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun-dong (pictured left) called for an "unprecedented strong response" in case the North completes its seventh nuclear test.
