GOD'S WORD FOR TODAY
DAILY DEVOTIONAL
VOWS AND OATHS
READ NUMBERS 30:1 THROUGH 31:54
“But, Mom, I promised to give them Popsicles®,” Scottie wailed as his mom sent him to his room.

“You cannot make promises like that without asking me,” the weary mom patiently explained. “We don’t have any.”

These are the regulations the Lord gave Moses concerning relationships between a man and his wife, and between a father and a young daughter who still lives at home (Numbers 30:16).

Parents protect children; spouses protect each other. God wants us to be people of our word, but He also wants to prevent us from making vows without carefully thinking through the consequences. So He provided a covering for married women and for unmarried daughters in the culture of that time. It’s easy to spout without considering why God gave these regulations. But God was providing a way out of rash pledges, while also giving the head of the family the option of letting it stand. The buck has to stop somewhere, and, in the Old Testament, God placed it on the shoulders of the father and husband of a household.

Prayer Suggestion: Pray for the protectors in your life.
