MAKING WRONGS RIGHT
READ EXODUS 22:1 THROUGH 24:18
“When I was twelve, I stole a watch from my cousin,” Mary Lou confessed to her pastor’s wife. “Since then I’ve become a Christian. Should I offer to pay my cousin for the watch?”
“Restitution is giving back to the rightful owner something lost or stolen,” the pastor’s wife replied. “The Bible gives us guidelines for returning stolen items.”
After the Israelites fled from Egypt and became a nation, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. In later Scripture, God gave specific situations to show how these laws apply to personal possessions.
“If someone borrows an animal from a neighbor and it is injured or dies when the owner is absent, the person who borrowed it must pay full compensation” (Exodus 22:14).
In the give-and-take of life, offenses happen. If you are troubled by a past action, go to the person involved. An apology may be in order. If you’ve stolen an item or it was lost or destroyed while in your possession, offer to pay the cost involved. You will be obeying God, and He will give you a clear conscience.
Thought for Today: Good relationships with God and others involve honesty, forgiveness, and reconciliation.
