LABOR - ENVIRONMENTAL FAILURES
GROWTH OF QUEENSLAND'S NATIONAL PARKS AND NATURE RESERVES DECLINE UNDER LABOR
The growth rate of Queensland’s national parks and nature refuges has shrunk under the Palaszczuk government and is significantly lower than the new additions overseen by former Liberal National Party premier Campbell Newman.
Analysis from the Queensland Conservation Council shows that under the Newman government from 2012 to 2015, the average annual rate of protected area established was 350,000ha. Since then, it has dropped to 240,000ha a year. QCC protected areas coordinator Andrew Picone said the government had failed to live up to its promises.
The reduction is despite the Palaszczuk government committing to a UN Convention on Biological Diversity to increase protected areas to 17 per cent of the state. About 8.7 per cent of the state is currently protected.
In reality - Labor has delivered just 50% of its UN commitment.
Labor has demonstrated its lack of commitment to the environment. Queensland’s biodiversity has been put ‘at risk’ by Labor’s environmental failures.
