The Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) has a long history of merging technology into its educational programs and operations. The district started using computers in the late 1970s and early 1980s, mainly for management purposes such as payroll systems and student records. In the mid 1980s, WCPSS launched its first computer literacy capability, which provided computer labs and software for elementary and middle schools. WCPSS also launched several innovative technology projects such as eSchools, which offered online courses and blended learning opportunities; and WCPSS Connect, which provided wireless Internet access for students and families at home.
